Google’s data editor Simon Rogers once said, “You’re never as honest as you are with your search engine. You get a sense of what people genuinely care about and genuinely want to know.” That’s a paradoxical yet insightful lead into the report that follows. “I first saw this story in 1972 and it is repeated every year since, or at least the same general theme,” said Marty Lavin, J.D., in an emailed remark to MHProNews. “A shame it never comes to pass.”  Lavin, a Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) award-winner provided a link to a report that praised and encouraged manufactured homes. It is a Lavinesque expression that suggests that the promise of manufactured housing’s tremendous potential has never been achieved. Restated, it is a polite barb aimed at the industry’s self-proclaimed leaders. The report Lavin provided may be part of an MHLivingNews fact check. Another comment that was emailed in was from Danny Ghorbani, a former MHI vice president and the first president and CEO of what became the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR).  Ghorbani’s comments for publication follow.

I just read your article about Sunshine homes’ 50th Anniversary and its founder, John Bostick…it is a very nice and most deserving write-up. If anybody in our industry deserves recognition, praise and accolades like these on his/her company’s 50th anniversary, it is John Bostick. I say this not only because of the continuing success of his company with its fine products and services, but because he was and continues to be one of the truly noble individuals who unselfishly have made sacrifices and  worked hard for nearly four decades, and succeeding with their collective fights in preserving and advancing the very existence of our federally-regulated industry in crisis after crisis in Washington, DC.

As an aside, our industry’s Hall of Fame Foundation should pay more attention to such industry folks in its annual life achievement recognition and induction program. And while John [Bostick] has already been inducted into the Hall, I dare to say that there are tens, if not hundreds of such individuals in our industry that the Hall should seek-out, on a bipartisan basis, for recognition.

What Your Peers and Colleagues Decided Where the Top Ten by Month in 2021

In 2019, Tim Williams, the executive director of the Ohio Manufactured Homes Association (OMHA) said that MHProNews was going “scorched earth” against certain self-described industry leaders. While it was an understandable comment, it was hardly apt. Why was it awry? Because a traditional role of authentic journalism is to hold the powerful to account. So says the says the American Press Institute (API). The fact that he or others may be busy kissing the ample derrieres of ‘leaders’ in profoundly disturbing ways despite the arguably growing and obvious evidence of their wrongdoing doesn’t mean others should blindly follow. Independent thinkers who see the affordable housing crisis for what it is – a terrible reality that is also a massive opportunity in disguise – recognize that manufactured housing should be doing somewhere between 5- to 10+plus-times the current new manufactured home annual production levels.

That noted, and as 5 MHI types clearly indicated this week, OMHA’s Williams is not alone.

But a look at the top 10 articles for each of the months in 2021 below speaks volumes. These are the reports that professional readers – who are the core of the audience on MHProNews – found the most relevant. While manufactured housing industry pros are the target audience here, it is well known from a range of data and inputs that our readers include public officials, nonprofits, researchers and others. For much of 2021, the data tells us that the Washington D.C. metro was occasionally the #2, but routinely the #3 most engaged with our x2 weekly emailed headline updates.

It is that mix of predominantly U.S., but small yet interesting numbers of international readers that often hail from ‘investing-mined’ countries that made these the most-read items. Note that some of these reports were published months or years before. So search results are what made them go up in a given month.  The top 10 most-read for a given month is a sliver of the roughly 20,000 posts online on MHProNews. When a topic stayed hot for more than a month, that is notable too. Last comment for now before provided the list, January 2021 through December 2021 is this following point. Articles that were published earlier in a month might have nudged out nearly as read reports that may have been published at the mid-point or late in that same month.
