Arlington, VA, October 19, 2009 — The Manufactured Housing Institute’s actual shipments report indicates that 4,472 new HUD-Code homes were shipped in August 2009, down 39.3 percent from August 2008. Shipments of single-section homes were down 37.5 percent, year over year, while shipments of multi-section homes were down 40.2 percent.
The seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of shipments was 46,000 in August, down 23.6 percent from the rate of 60,200 posted in July. The SAAR corrects for normal seasonal variations in shipments and projects an annual shipments pace based on the current monthly total.
Year to date, shipments are down 43.1 percent. Single-section shipments are down 40.9 percent, while multi-section shipments are down 44.3 percent.
Year-over-year shipments were down in all nine Divisions. Shipments were down in the Mountain (-49.6 percent), Pacific (-46.5 percent), West North Central (-44.8 percent), West South Central (-40.7 percent), East North Central (-40.2 percent), East South Central (-36.8 percent), New England (-35 percent), South Atlantic (-33.8 percent) and Middle Atlantic (-27.1 percent) Divisions.
In August 2009, shipments were down in 41 states, up in five states and flat in three states, compared to August 2008. Shipments were up in Maryland (39.1 percent), Colorado (9.4 percent) and West Virginia (5.2 percent). Shipments were flat in Vermont, Nebraska, Alaska, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Shipments were down in Connecticut (-88.9 percent), Utah (-71.8 percent), New Jersey (-71.4 percent), Wisconsin (-62.7 percent), Wyoming (-62.3 percent), Arizona (-61 percent), Oklahoma (-58.7 percent), Iowa (-56.8 percent), Minnesota (-56.7 percent), Oregon (-55.3 percent), Michigan (-51.9 percent), Alabama (-48.8 percent), Missouri (-48.1 percent), Idaho (-48 percent), North Dakota (-46.7 percent), California (-46.6 percent), Montana (-46.2 percent), Illinois (-44.6 percent), Louisiana (-44.3 percent), Arkansas (-42.5 percent), Virginia (-41.8 percent), Nevada (-41.7 percent), Ohio (-41.2 percent), Georgia (-40.5 percent), Mississippi (-39.4 percent), Washington (-38.9 percent), Delaware (-38.7 percent), North Carolina (-37.9 percent), Florida (-37.8 percent), New Mexico (-37.6 percent), South Carolina (-36.3 percent), New Hampshire (-33.3 percent), Texas (-32.4 percent), Maine (-32.4 percent), Kansas (-29.5 percent), Tennessee (-28.3 percent), Kentucky (-27.5 percent), New York (-26.1 percent), Pennsylvania (-23.2 percent), South Dakota (-15.8 percent) and Indiana (-8 percent).
Total floors shipped in August were 7,436, down 39.8 percent from August 2008. The number of reporting plants for August was 158, up two from July 2009. The number of corporations was 61, also up two from July. More details will be forthcoming in MHI’s Monthly Economic Report for August.
