TheProvince reports from British Columbia, Canada, that several manufactured and modular housing producers in Canada are making small modular homes that can legally be placed beside or behind an existing single-family dwelling, where permitted. Called garden or “granny” suites, the portable homes have a kitchen, one or two bedrooms, bathroom and storage space. The municipality may set guidelines on how close to the main home, parking requirements, how close to the road, and how long the structure may stay there. The city of Vancouver approved “laneway housing” in 2009. These small houses are sited at the rear of an existing single-family home.
