The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) states if certain legislators have their way, this could be the last year for the mortgage interest deduction (MID). Calling it “the most important tax deduction for tens of millions of middle-class families”, NAHB says “more than 33 million families benefited from the deduction in 2010 and these households saved a collective $83 billion on their tax bills.” Some policymakers suggest it should be weakened or abolished, saying the federal government needs the tax revenue; but NAHB says it would be a huge mistake to alter the MID while the economy is beginning to limp forward. MHProNews.com has learned a poll last summer indicated nine of ten Americans favor keeping it.
