Residents at a mixed-use land-lease community that includes mobile home, manufactured housing, and RVs face eviction due to the City of Roswell, New Mexico’s stance on a surge of drugs, crime, sanitation and electric utility issues.
KRQE reports that the owner of the property died last year. They say conditions have been in decline since then. “Thursday night, the city council will take up the recommendation to have the property condemned,” said Todd Wildermuth, the City of Roswell Spokesperson. The sign on the property at 1114 E Bland St, Roswell, NM 88203 is partially faded, and the buildings associated with the property need attention. Arial evidence and the video suggests a mix of units that include pre-HUD Code mobile home, towable and motorized RVs, and manufactured homes at “…Village Mobile Home Park.”
“We issued a notice to the folks that are living there just to kind of give them a heads up and make them aware of the situation, which is conditions are unsanitary there, there’s some dangerous conditions. Police have received lots of calls over last month,” said Todd.
“It, it just completely threw all our plans, you know we got things going on and um, we just.. now we’re, we don’t know what to do,” said Juan Garcia a resident at the park. Garcia said they have been living there for three years and that their bills have been paid on time. After the owner died, no one was left to care for the community.
The City of Roswell handed out notices about “the unlivable conditions” and their plan to condemn the property. Tents are among the shelter that have popped up at the neglected property.
“We’ve reached out to as many people as we could to try and help, our like family members and stuff, but everybody is in a rut right now,” said Juan.
“We need some more time for sure, this came all suddenly, and we have nowhere to go and move our property to,” said Victoria Neil a resident at the park.
When the Roswell City Council met to consider this issue, they voted to condemn the property, citing unsafe conditions including “no electricity” and “poor sanitation.”
Two days after the local news story aired the city’s issued “red flags” there.
Roswell is now in the formal process of contacting the owner to get the property cleaned. Reportedly Roswell code enforcement expects it will be at least eight weeks before anyone would have to leave.
While there is no indication yet, the pattern by some of using a local jurisdiction to order the closure of a property to allow for sale and/or redevelopment is worth monitoring. See examples of such concerns in the reports linked above and below.
