“Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals is a 1971 book by community activist and writer Saul D. Alinsky about how to successfully run a movement for change,” says left-leaning Wikipedia. “It was the last book written by Alinsky, and it was published shortly before his death in 1972.[1]: His goal was to create a guide for future community organizers, to use in uniting low-income communities, or “Have-Nots”, in order for them to gain by any effective, non-violent means social, political, legal, and economic power.[2] Inside of it, Alinsky compiled the lessons he had learned throughout his experiences of community organizing from 1939 to 1971. He targeted these lessons at the current, new generation of radicals.[3]” So why apply Alinsky’s Rules to the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI)? Why use satire?
The answers to those questions and others are found in Alinsky’s Rules and MHI’s odd institutional behavior in the 21st century.
Alinsky’s Rules have been a staple on the political left for decades.
But in more recent years, there are ‘conservatives’ on the right who have reflected on his ‘rules’ and decided if it is good enough for the goose, it is good enough for the gander. In that mindset, turnabout is fair play. So, in our current political environment, there are people and organizations on the left and the right which apply Alinsky’s Rules to their opposition.
Many have watched while literally thousands of independent manufactured housing businesses and/or manufactured home community locations vanish or get absorbed by others despite MHI’s claim of representing “all segments” of the industry. Those losses of businesses are evidenced in part by MHI itself and MHI members.
Two of Alinsky’s Rules that jump off the page in how they apply to the Monopolistic Housing Institute (MHI) are these:
- “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
- “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. There is no defense. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.”
Reflect on this. MHI oddly claims “clout.” They have proven ‘access’ to an array of public officials. Yet despite their obvious access to the halls of power in Washington, D.C. there is no evidence of any progress on any of the issues that MHI – the Manipulative Housing Institute – claims to care about.
- That begs the question, is MHI merely inept at doing what they claim?
- Or are MHI’s leaders rather posturing and boldly paltering while they lull potential victims among “all segments” of the manufactured home industry into complacency while they get consolidated by MHI’s dominating members?
Despite being asked repeatedly about such concerns and others, MHI remains silent on them.
“Make the enemy live up to its own” claims. MHProNews would editorially argue that MHI is the friend of consolidators and the enemy of independents and millions of consumers too.
If NAHB Wanted to Create a Trade Group in MHVille…
Image if the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) wanted to create a faux manufactured housing trade group that postured efforts but ineptly failed – in some cases for decades – to implement existing federal laws that benefited manufactured housing if those laws were properly implemented.
When you ‘imagine’ such a trade group, would you have to look beyond the Manufactured Housing Institute? After all, what is it that they have accomplished in the 21st century after the passage of the laws that they claim they want enforced?
Keep in mind that HUD and other federal officials have helped document the failures of MHI’s so called advocacy for “all segments” of the industry. Why isn’t MHI calling out such facts?
Then, imagine that not only NAHB, but other conventional housing trade groups could count on MHI to help them in their advocacy! But in return, numbers of those other trade groups routinely fail to do anything that helps MHI get the laws they claim they want enforced actually implemented!
- Isn’t that how MHI and their so-called ‘housing coalition’ seems to routinely operate?
- Why doesn’t MHI work authentically hand-in-glove with the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) as it did when it joined MHARR in getting the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 implemented?
When it comes to MHI, as the classic Wendy’s ad said, “where is the beef?” Beyond the steady march to consolidation of the industry, which they claim to have an antitrust policy in place, MHI appears to be by consolidators and for consolidators.
Here are Alinsky’s bakers dozen Rules for Radicals, per Wikipedia.
The Rules:
- “Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.”
- “Never go outside the expertise of your people.”
- “Whenever possible go outside the expertise of the enemy.”
- “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
- “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. There is no defense. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.”
- “A good tactic is one your people enjoy.”
- “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.”
- “Keep the pressure on.”
- “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself. “
- “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.”
- “If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside; this is based on the principle that every positive has its negative.”
- “The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.”
- “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it. “
To the point of rule 13, there is sadly hardly any need to ‘freeze’ the target, is there? It is as if MHI is already frozen in time, mouthing the same platitudes today as they did a decade or more ago. Doesn’t MHI realize that some people in the industry have memories?
MHI appears to count on the “Illusory Effect” of having ‘trusted’ people involved in their organization, and they enjoy a circle fest of praising each other. But when some of those people who give praise are examined, aren’t they also at times among those who have dirty hands?
Or doesn’t MHI realize that there is a record of their remarks has been dutifully published here on MHProNews? Where is MHI’s progress? What has been accomplished for all their access and face time?
MHI can’t have it both ways. Either they are effective or they are not. But what is occurring appears to be violations of several federal laws, and possibly numbers of state laws too.
MHI says they are nonpartisan. Really? Sure, they donate via their MHI PAC to candidates from both sides of the Congressional aisle. But when they are carefully examined aren’t they fitting the mold of those DINO Democrats and RINOs who say they want to benefit the little guy and minorities, but in fact are failing them right and left?
As evidence for the folly of trusting MHI goes, it seems apparent that they don’t care that they are periodically mocked.
MHI leaders appear not to care that they don’t have the chutzpah to stand up and debate in public their ‘accomplishments,’ because what they have presided over is a series of embarrassing failures that span years.
One need not look much beyond the exchange between a congressman that MHI apparently prompted to ask HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge about enhanced preemption and why she doesn’t enforce it. Yet, MHI thinks their own industry is too lackluster or perhaps so overly trusting that MHI will never get caught in their own paltering and whopper sized lies?
Even MHI’s inside and outside attorneys appear to be bogus preening wimps! Those ‘suits’ also duck and run for cover rather than engage! Or what are their parent companies paying those attorneys for anyway?
Or perhaps more to the point, why aren’t MHI leaders paying those lawyers to sue – wait for it – public officials who are failing to do the job that MHI admits in various published statements that Feds or those organizations that Feds ‘regulate’ ought to be doing, but aren’t? Local jurisdictions, DOE, HUD, FHA, Ginnie Mae, FHFA, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac come to mind.
Several of those have been accused by resident groups of making ‘affordable’ manufactured housing unaffordable due to aggressive price hikes! Then, Lesli Gooch, Ph.D. (as in Piled Higher and Deeper) has the audacity to tell WGBH: “As with other forms of housing, it is easy to come up with isolated incidences of outsized rent increases or questionable practices,” Gooch said. Given that several of those “isolated incidences” have included the names of several of MHI’s own member firms, in apparently repeated violation of MHI-NCC’s oddly named “Code of Ethical Conduct,” it makes one wonder what dictionary Gooch uses? The synonyms of ethical include moral, principled, proper, fair, and virtuous. Is that how Gooch sees, Havenpark, Impact Communities, RHP Properties, Clayton Homes, 21st Mortgage Corporation, Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance (VMF), or a string of other MHI member brands? Has Gooch and her organization’s board of directors never read Pinocchio or watched the movie?
Oh! Pardon me! MHI’s board is dominated by some of the same brands that are doing the behaviors mocked by HBO’s foul-mouthed satirist on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver! That was one of the things Oliver missed, but MHLivingNews and MHProNews didn’t!
Wikipedia said of Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals that: “Though published for the new generation of counterculture-era organizers in 1971, Alinsky’s principles have been applied by numerous government, labor, community, and congregation-based organizations, and the main themes of his organizational methods have been recurring elements in political campaigns in recent years.”
That same source said: “On the 4th fly-leaf page, after a dedication to Alinsky’s wife Irene and quotes from Rabbi Hillel and Thomas Paine, is the following text:
“Lest we forget at least an over-the-shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical: from all our legends, mythology, and history (and who is to know where mythology leaves off and history begins— or which is which), the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom — Lucifer.”
Lucifer, another name for the fallen angelic being also called Satan, the Devil, or the devious Serpent in the Garden of Eden “rules,” so to speak, over Hell.
For those who are or have suffered in the aftermath of the otherwise bizarre patchwork of MHI preening, paltering, posturing without provable performance for their own stated goals, ‘hell’ is an apt term. Isn’t it about time that MHI’s top staffers and board members are held responsible for their improper actions and inactions? Isn’t mocking their outrageous failures a place to start?
Alinsky had a sharp point about mocking his opponents because “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. There is no defense. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule.”
Oxford Languages explains that ridicule is defined in part like this: “[to] subject (someone or something) to contemptuous and dismissive language or behavior.”
Anyone who takes MHI’s claims serious after carefully studying their own claims, their own authentic history, their stunning brand of upside down reminiscent of what Wikipedia said of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (commonly Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 English novel by Lewis Carroll. It details the story of a young girl named Alice who falls through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world of anthropomorphic creatures.”
As with Carroll’s claimed sharp critique of aspects of British society’s “treatment of workers,” MHI’s version of “Topsy–Turvy” or “Through the Looking Glass” absurdities abound.
But to those who have suffered at the hands of MHI and its dominating brands, it is no laughing matter, is it?
Two quotes from Kevin Clayton, one of Warren Buffett’s wing men at Berkshire Hathaway, ought to raise the eyebrows of those who innocently think that MHI is a legitimate trade group.
Alinsky-inspired radical satire doesn’t necessarily require evidence or facts.
But for those brave souls with strong stomachs who want to better understand just how far detached from reality MHI’s statements are from their absurd posturing, the links herein and the following examples may serve to illustrate the points and editorial reflections raised above.
One truly has to be a fan of Charlie Brown being repeatedly abused and taken advantage of by Lucy – or is it, Lesli? – who keeps pulling the football away from the cartoonish Brown. Why does Charlie Brown keeps falling for variations of her same cheap tricks? Why do some trusting souls continue to trust MHI after some 20 years of demonstrable failures? Let’s look to Warren Buffett for a key clue.
Give Warren Buffett his due. He and his longtime partner Charles “Charlie” Munger, J.D., called themselves ‘partners in crime.’ That may be truer than some previously wanted to think. After all, violating the Sherman antitrust act can be a felony, criminal offense. So long as DINO Democrats and PINO Biden is in office, or others like them are in key positions, Buffett and Munger may continue to skate. They may continue to speak in code publicly about the moat – which is an apparent code for monopolistic practices. When Warren Buffett speaks about the Castle and Moat, or when his son Peter Buffett references philanthro-feudalism, those are clues as to where the elites want to take America.
Underperformance benefits moat-builders because it keeps competitors out and limits competition from within. Ironically, Biden’s 2021 Executive Order on Competition explained the harms of these monsters that undermine the American Dream. The solution?
Step 1) Start by keep reading MHProNews and MHLivingNews, and make sure your trusted circle is reading here too.
Step 2) YOU vote to toss as many of the rascal DINO Dems out during the 2022 midterms as possible.
Step 3) Once a new Congress is seated, or before when possible, press public officials to enforce existing laws. Keep a record of who does what. Feel free to share those results with MHProNews for possible future reports.
Accountability ought to follow Alinsky-inspired mockery of MHI and their dominating ‘consolidator’ brands.
Don’t let anyone steal your dreams or the dreams of your friends. This is the time to fight back. There are more of us than there are of them. The emperors’ fine clothes can vanish like a morning vapor, just as it did with other big time billionaire con artists before them.
