From Nevada, MHProNews has learned the Lyon County Commissioners are being asked to change the ordinance that forbids the siting of manufactured homes older than 15 years in the county. The downturn in the economy led to the sale of many homes that were foreclosed upon and had been vacant for up to three years, resulting in the application for exemptions to the ordinance. According to rgj, the measure was initially passed in the early 1990’s to regulate the health and safety of manufactured homes being sited in Lyon County, just south of Reno, because they were forbidden in other counties. Through an arrangement with the electric company, the new proposal would only apply to MH where the power had been off for at least a year. Since only the state’s Manufactured Housing Division has the authority to inspect the interior of homes, the main alteration to the original ordinance is that the exterior of the home has to meet certain Lyon County standards in order to be sited. The commissioners chose to retain the provision that prevents manufactured homes older than 15 years being transported into the county.
