Responding to Hurricane Sandy, in a letter to the editor in the Brooklyn Daily, M. Taeler suggests Floyd Bennett Field as a site to produce modular homes, and set up a community to house the chronic homeless and the victims of the hurricane. Now a park, the field was NYC’s first municipal airport. The writer says it solves two problems: It provides safe and warm homes for the destitute, and brings jobs to the city. The writer also mentions the thousands of unused shipping containers stacked on the docks that could be converted to temporary homes. As MHProNews has reported in the past, shipping containers have been made into homes successfully in various parts of the nation.
