While some were speculating that Ben Carson, M.D., might be named by the Trump Transition team to return to HUD, President-elect Donald J. Trump (R) has surprised many by nominating Eric Scott Turner, a former Texas lawmaker to be the next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
1) In an email to MHProNews was the following communique. “Scott Turner was chosen to run HUD:”
I am pleased to nominate Scott Turner, from the Great State of Texas, as the Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Scott is an NFL Veteran, who, during my First Term, served as the First Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC), helping to lead an Unprecedented Effort that Transformed our Country’s most distressed communities. Those efforts, working together with former HUD Secretary, Ben Carson, were maximized by Scott’s guidance in overseeing 16 Federal Agencies which implemented more than 200 policy actions furthering Economic Development. Under Scott’s leadership, Opportunity Zones received over $50 Billion Dollars in Private Investment!
After graduating from University of Illinois, Scott was drafted by the Washington Redskins, and spent nine years in the NFL before he went on to win a State House Race in Texas, where he was born and raised.

3) The remark about eliminating all housing vouchers should be taken with a grain of salt, but that and other remarks or reports reflect the views of those who expressed them and may or may not be the view of MHProNews. Needless to say, there are plenty of slurs being slung about over the airwaves, cable, and social media.
For example, the next remark is apparently by a never-Trump type who is either not informed about Scott Turner’s robust background, including his time at HUD and working with Dr. Carson, Senator Tim Scott (SC-R) and those involved with Opportunity Zones. Time will tell, but Turner’s vast array of experience, communications, and leadership skills may make him an exceptional selection.

4) There is nothing on the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) website homepage “news” as of 11.23.2024 at 9:57 AM. The latest item on MHI’s news is still from 11.4.2024, before the election.
6) According to left-leaning Wikipedia is the following.
Eric Scott Turner (born February 26, 1972) is an American businessman, motivational speaker, politician, and former professional football player, who previously served as the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council.[1] Turner formerly served as a Texas state representative for the 33rd District, which includes part of Collin County and all of Rockwall County. Before entering politics, Turner was an American footballcornerback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons.
Turner played football at Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas. He then attended the University of Illinois, where he played as their starting cornerback and graduated from with a degree in speech communications. He declared for the NFL Draft in 1995 and was selected by the Washington Redskins in the seventh round.[3]
Turner played cornerback for the Redskins from 1995 to 1996, for the San Diego Chargers from 1998 to 2001, and for the Denver Broncos in 2003.[4] He was the last Charger to wear #21 before Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson wore the number.[5] Turner played in 101 NFL games, finishing his NFL career with 89 tackles, five interceptions, and two sacks.[4]
During NFL off-seasons, Turner worked as an intern for Congressman Duncan Hunter. After retiring from football, he accepted a full-time job in the congressman’s office. In 2006, he ran for the vacated seat of California’s 50th congressional district in the 2006 special election to replace Duke Cunningham. In the blanket primary election held April 11, 2006, Turner finished eighth out of 17 candidates.[citation needed] After losing the election, Turner moved back to Frisco, Texas.
In 2012, Turner announced his candidacy for the newly created 33rd District of the Texas House of Representatives. Turner defeated Jim Pruitt in the Republican primary and defeated Libertarian candidate Michael Carrasco in the November 6 general election. He was sworn in on January 8, 2013. In 2013, he was named by GOPAC to their list of Emerging Leaders in the Republican party.[6]

In 2019, President Trump appointed Turner as the director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, created by Executive Order 13853.[10]
Other endeavors
In April 2007, Turner took a job at Systemware, a content management software company, where he was[when?] director of business development. He also launched[when?] a custom men’s suit clothing line.[citation needed]
At the December 27, 2020 church service for Prestonwood Baptist Church (where Turner and his family are members), it was announced that Turner would be joining the pastoral staff upon the transition from the Trump to the Biden administration.[11]
In 2023, Turner was named Chief Visionary Officer of JPI, a national developer, builder, and investment manager of Class A, attainable and affordable multifamily assets across the U.S.[12]
7) Time tends to reveal many things. This should be considered in the light of generally rising manufactured housing production under Trump, which implemented some useful, albeit obviously incomplete, steps that benefited the manufactured home industry with HUD Secretary Ben Carson. For example, there is no known evidence that Carson ever personally addressed, or was even personally advised of, the details of the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (a.k.a.: MHIA 2000, MHIA, 2000 Reform Act, 2000 Reform Law). Letters from MHI or MHARR to Dr. Carson may or may not have ever been provided to Carson by HUD staff. That said, Carson took several higher profile steps aimed at benefiting manufactured housing acceptance, such as the Innovative Housing Showcase (IHS), and several largely useful statements and addresses about HUD Code manufactured homes to mainstream media and at public events when manufactured housing wasn’t the focus or topic.
Then HUD Secretary Ben Carson, M.D., quote is from the official comments as prepared, per the HUD website, on May 7, 2019. So, keep in mind that those costs per square foot for conventional housing and manufactured homes have risen since then. But the savings rate is about the same.
8) By way of contrast, while the Biden-Harris (D) administration paid routinely lip service to manufactured housing, when specifically asked by a congressional representative in a CSPAN video recorded hearing, their HUD appointee, Marcia Fudge outright rejected the notion of implementing the 2000 Reform laws “enhanced preemption” provision. MHI seemed to be curiously playing a proverbial game of footsie with Democrats that were not paralleled during the Trump 1.0 term of office. While Democrats seem to have increasingly embraced the financial and political elites that were considered by some a core of Republican support years ago. By contrast, Trump-MAGA-“America First” Republicans seem to be evolving into a working, middle class, and retirees party that has a greater depth and breadth than left-leaning Democrats feature. Former Democratic presidential candidates like Rep. Seth Moulton (MA-D) and Senator Bernie Sanders (VT-Democratic Socialist) are examples of that concern.
Bernie Sanders: “It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them. The American people are angry and want change. And they’re right.”

9) Furthermore, the Biden-Harris era antitrust era has no known evidence of taking any serious antitrust efforts involving manufactured housing, despite some useful lingo about antitrust more broadly.
10) That is true despite MHProNews being aware of an antitrust complaint provided to Biden-Harris era federal officials and other complaints to federal agencies during their term in office. There has been no known responses to those evidence-based complaints.
11) By contrast, during the Trump-era, MHProNews has exclusively reported that a meeting of multiple antitrust attorneys took place to discuss possible action in purported violation of antitrust laws.
12) To be clear, the Trump 1.0 was obviously not perfect. MHProNews lashed establishment appointees at the time. Examples of that are shown below.
13) But in fairness to Trump, his first administration was plagued by a mix of disrupters and “establishment” type picks. Trump and MAGA backers were also hobbled by those who postured being for the America First agenda but were anything but. Trump all but said as much during his longform interview with Joe Rogan. Trump’s daughter in law Lara, married to son Eric, said similarly. But the Trump Transition appears to be focused on truly disrupting the entrenched bureaucracy and its “deep state” or “blob” tentacles. The presence of former Democrats like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., J.D., Tulsi Gabbard, and self-described moderate Democrat Elon Musk are examples of a transition that is moving swiftly with a message of enforcing existing laws and cutting out fat and waste in the federal government. MHProNews reported back-stabbers in the Trump Adminstration at that time.
14) While a former Trump era official initially denied that claim, when pressed after being told that there were multiple sources that had told MHProNews about that meeting, that source in an apparent pivot replied, “elections have consequences.”
