Kiplinger informs MHProNews a Virginia couple wanted to build a home in a mountainous area but could not get county approval for nearly two years because of the steep slopes, succeeded in having a 2,200 square foot custom modular home installed. Built by Jakobsen and Rowe of Purcellville, Vir., the house cost around $400,000, but took months less than the challenge of a comparable site-built home. Andrea Browne notes four things to keep in mind with a modular home: It takes less time to build than site-built; in addition to the cost of the home, you have to pay for on site preparation and infrastructure; modulars withstand severe weather systems better than site built because of the rigidity of the connected modules; modular homes can be remodeled, but the contractor needs to know in advance because of the different support system; and it may take longer to sell a modular home because of its perceived connection to pre-HUD Code homes.
