After World War II prefabricated home builder National Homes of Lafayette, Ind. supplied affordable homes for thousands of people between 1945 and 1965. Two to four-bedroom homes with 1,000 to 1,600 square feet costing $7,000 to $16,000 with down payments of $900—less for veterans—put homeownership within range of the majority of Americans. Canandaigua, New York saw 400 new homes built in this period, 250 of them were National Homes erected by the GWF Homes Corporation. The exterior walls, interior partitions, roof trusses and gables all came from a National branch factory in Horseheads, NY and were assembled on a prepared site within hours of arrival. As MHProNews has learned from mpnnow.com, the remainder of the homes were then finished by local businesses to the company’s specs. in 2-3 weeks. In 1965 National began building its own subdivisions.
