The original geodesic Dome Home of architect Buckminster Fuller in Carbondale, Illinois, listed in 2006 on the National Register of Historic Places, will be restored and preserved beginning with a ground-breaking ceremony April 19 to initiate the project. Made of 60 wood triangle panels by the Pease Manufacturing Company of Hamilton, Ohio, the modular home was assembled in seven hours on April 19, 1960. Fuller is credited with promoting the construction of 3,000 domes until his death in 1983, according to kfvs12.com, but his own home fell into disrepair during a 30-year period when it was rented as student housing. MHProNews.com has learned a benefactor purchased the home in 2001 and had a protective cover built to insulate the dome from further damage. Fuller’s vision of the future was of manufactured homes designed and made of materials not available during his lifetime. ##
