Old Dominion University and Hampton University in Norfolk, Virginia, have joined forces to compete in the international Solar Decathlon, a competition to design and build a totally green modular home from scratch. Funded in part by donations from alumni and contractors, the 30 students will be up against 19 other university teams from China, Belgium and Canada, as well as other U.S. universities. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the six unit apartment building will feature recycled wastewater, balconies, retractable windows, solar panels to heat water, and Energy Star appliances, according to The Virginian-Pilot. The Norfolk Housing and Redevelopment Authority is already considering the design for infill urban housing. The competition will be held in Washington, D.C., Sept.23-Oct. 3.
