Following a story MHProNews posted Sept. 5, 2014 regarding a proposed 166 unit modular housing complex straddling the S. Alouette River in the Maple Ridge area of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the proposal has become an item for debate among candidates for the Maple Ridge Council election set for Nov. 15. The current council voted in favor of the development despite staff’s recommendation that it be turned down, according to mapleridgenews.
Candidate Craig Speirs is opposed to the idea, as is mayoralty challenger Nicole Read, who said, “The community firmly said no, staff encouraged that it be denied, so why did they move it forward?”
She added there are no sidewalks, no bus service and a half hour walk to the nearest store. While Mayor Ernie Daykin also voted against the modular units, another challenger for the mayor’s seat, Graham Mowatt calls the modular project “sprawl.” ##
