The sprinkler debate in Minnesota attracted a standing-room only crowd to the House Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee, according to the Twin Cities Daily Planet.  The bill would prohibit sprinklers from being installed in new or existing homes.  The sponsor of the bill says the National Fire Protection Association measures the gain of sprinklers over smoke detectors as negligible.  Mark Brunner, president of the Minnesota Manufactured Modular Housing Association, says adding sprinklers to prefabricated homes would add $4,000 to $7,000 depending on the house size, which could put them beyond the reach of many home buyers.  Notes Brunner, “Manufactured homes in Minnesota are the largest source of non-subsidized affordable housing.”  Read this Industry In Focus report for background on the sprinkler issue.
