The New York Post reports the newest look on the beaches in the Tony Hamptons East End is housing made from steel shipping containers. Not terribly different from modular homes, the containers are sent to a facility in Pennsylvania for repurposing, and then sent on to their final destination. The process takes eight to ten weeks, materials costs are 15 percent less, and it can be completed in 55 percent less time than a conventional home, saving labor and construction cost interest, similar to the process for modular house construction. The first one will be a 1,932 square foot, four bedroom house 500 feet from the beach in Amagansett. Affordable? Under $1.5 million, say the developers.
