Four much-needed modular duplex rental units have been added to the Lower Sioux Community housing stock for tribal member families in southwest Minnesota. Known as Lower Sioux Estates, construction of the three and four-bedroom, two bath units began in the fall of 2014 following the application in 2012.
With funding from the Minnesota Finance Housing Agency and the Economic Development and Housing Challenge Program, Phyllis Littlecreek-Wilbanks, Lower Sioux housing director, said the Lower Sioux Community provided funds as well.
Constructed by Dynamic Homes, the units utilize Energy Star appliances and light fixtures, high efficiency HVAC, water conserving fixtures and Low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, adhesives and sealants. Four more single-family units are planned for the community, which will eventually include a community garden and playground as well as more housing units.
Prior to the construction of these homes, very few rental units have been available in the community, according to redwoodfallsgazette.
Although not used in this particular development, Title VI of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act was passed in 1996. MHProNews has learned independently the first Title VI loan was not closed until 2000 in Mountain Village, Alaska, for the Asa’carsarmiut tribe. ##
