Updating a story MHProNews posted Aug. 19, 2015, regarding modular containers for homeless people in Honolulu, the initial two containers, both Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant, were sited at Hale Mauliola, according to khon2.
The first of 25 planned for Sand Island, they are made from new shipping containers, and each has a programmable combination lock on the door, insulation, and screen doors and windows. “It’s a pilot project and if it’s fully used, then we may expand,” said Eduardo Manglallan, deputy director, Department of Facility Maintenance. “We can expand, because we have five acres here that we leased from the state. We only used one acre up to now. It’s manned 24/7 and once (Institute for Human Services) becomes operational, there will be one more security guard just roaming this place.” The Institute for Human Services is the designated provider of intake services, the program office and case management.
It is anticipated the first nine modular containers will be sited by Oct. 30, and the remainder will be operational by the end of the year. Residents are expected to begin moving in next month. ##
