Modular Building Gaining Momentum in Australia

aussie_modular_bgc_residential__businessnews_auOne of the presenters at the Victorian Manufacturing Industry Showcase at Dandenong in Australia was modular home builder Prebuilt, as MHProNews understands. Established in 2003 in the Melbourne suburb of Kilsyth, Managing Director Rob Colquhoun said the company has moved away from conventional kit homes and is developing efficiencies that prefabrication can deliver.

With 150 construction workers trained in modular methods, an office staff of 50 and three manufacturing facilities totaling 130,000 square feet, Prebuilt is manufacturing 30-50 modular homes and over 100 commercial modules annually.

Speaking to manmonthly.au, Colquhoun said, “Significant efficiencies have been achieved including in waste reduction and key methods have been adopted from the automotive sector. We have also developed our own technology and systems that enable the most efficient and innovative construction of our architecturally designed houses.

Noting the predominance of modular building in Japan and the uptick of modular methods in Norway, Sweden and Germany, he says the market in Australia is gaining momentum. “Each of our homes begins with concept design, during which floor plans and 3D models are created. This in turn allows a fixed price to be established even before production begins and ensures no unpleasant surprises due to cost blowouts.

Large scale modular projects have been completed for McDonald’s Restaurants, the Anglican and Catholic Churches, Lend Lease, Mirvac and Stockland. ##
