In a video address to the Manufactured Housing Institute’s (MHI) National Communities Council (NCC) Fall Leadership Forum, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julian Castro, calling HUD “The Department of Opportunity,” praised the manufactured home industry for “giving more families access to quality, safe and affordable housing.”
The unofficial transcript of his talk, as provided by manufacturedhomelivingnews, in noting the affordable housing crisis, Castro says, “A good home is a powerful platform to spark progress in people’s lives. It connects families to the communities that surround them, and it lays the foundation for their health, their happiness and their future success.”
L.A. “Tony” Kovach, publisher of mhlivingnews and mhpronews, says while many may not equate modern manufactured homes with quality, safety and affordable housing, as Sec. Castro describes, HUD strictly controls production of manufactured homes across the nation by administering the manufactured housing safety and construction standards.
Bill Matchneer, former administrator of the HUD Code manufactured housing program, states that modern manufactured homes are as well made as site-built homes, for about half the price.
What Castro failed to mention are the well-to-do, especially Hollywood folks, who live in MH.
