In Brooklyn for nearly 20 years, modular builder Capsys will close their manufacturing plant in Brooklyn’s Atlantic Navy yards, laying off 54 union employees, according to what Crain’s New York tells biztimes, as the company looks for a more affordable location.
As MHProNews published March 12, 2014, Tom O’Hara, the director of business development for Capsys, said, noting the conservation that results from modular building, “We can do a unique airflow test on each of our modules that is not possible in traditional building. We essentially suck the air out of an apartment and measure the difference between the exterior and interior. As a result our buildings are 100 per cent more airtight than required – simply because the corners are actually square and flush.”
Capsys built the modules for the 55-unit micro modular apartment building in NYC, as MHProNews reported April 3 2014, as well as for the Forest City Ratner modular complex at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn. Additionally, Capsys built the six-story, 80 module MacDougal St. Apartments complex in NYC, as MHProNews reported June 1, 2012.
Capsys may be selling the name and the intellectual property to a modular builder in Pennsylvania.
Meanwhile, New York City plans to spend $140 million to develop the one million square-feet that Capsys will be vacating. ##
