PRLog reports that Epoch Homes, a modular builder from Pembroke, New Hampshire, is collaborating with two UMassachusetts colleges to build a net zero energy modular home.  The Massachusetts College of Art and Design Department of Architecture, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell College of Engineering will work with Epoch to design a home for entry in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon competition.  The 1,000 square foot home with moveable walls is designed for three, and features solar photovoltaic panels that can retain heat for use in the cold New England winters sufficient to produce an energy surplus.  The solar thermal system will provide 85 percent of the hot water needs.  The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center named Epoch Homes as the first Green Approved Modular factory.  This partnership is one of 20 university-led teams from across the globe taking part in the competition.  The Solar Decathlon homes winner will be chosen during the display of all the homes on the National Mall, Washington D.C., September 23 to October 2, 2011.
