States Receive Disaster Relief

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is speeding disaster relief to numerous counties in Montana and Vermont for people whose homes were damaged by the storms and flooding in April and May.  The disaster declaration, announced by President Obama last week, permits the state to re-allocate federal resources to address housing needs and other services, especially for low income victims.  It gives a 90-day moratorium on foreclosure proceedings on Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans, and provides mortgage insurance, and 100 percent financing, for people needing to buy or rebuild homes.  It also offers federally-guaranteed loans to state and local governments for housing rehabilitation, economic development and infrastructure repairs.
