The Joplin Globe reports that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is placing 43 of their homes in Country Acres Mobile Home Community for homeless survivors of the May 22 tornado. There are already 186 homes, and acreage is available to develop 30 more if needed. One of the first families to move out of a Red Cross shelter moved into a three-bedroom modular unit at Country Acres. The home is equipped with weather radios and smoke alarms, and there is an underground storm shelter just steps away. FEMA housing specialist Pam Willis says 500 other families have housing needs, and there are currently another 140 sites available. She says city officials have identified other sites that could be developed, and FEMA will continue to supply the needed housing to those who qualify. In a July 5 story, we wrote about contracts being let to construct two manufactured home communities for tornado survivors near the airport.
