MountainXpress reports that students from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A B Tech) in Asheville, North Carolina, have built a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified house that they are selling to raise money for the school. The 280 square foot modular home, from the school’s Construction Management and Sustainability Technologies program, features concrete counter tops, a design for ease of modification and additions, super efficient HVAC, and wood floors and walls. “When we ask ourselves ‘where would Henry David Thoreau live in the 21st century?’ this home is the place,” said Heath Moody, interim chair of Construction Management at A-B Tech. “This is a high-performance home that may be small in its ecological and physical footprint, but is huge in many other ways. High performance buildings are the future of construction and the A-B Tech Carpentry program is a great way to learn advanced methods in green construction.”
