With funding from a research council and industry, the goal is to forge ties between the university and builders and material suppliers and thereby create standards, certification methods, codes of practice and financial models for modular housing.
Currently, the modular housing industry comprises three percent of the $140 billion annual construction industry, amounting to $4.6 billion. ARC Centre’s research director, Dr. Tuan Ngo, said this compares to the 60 to 70 percent market share in many European countries. “There is a huge potential for growth. The centre . . .aims to propel the sector beyond 10 per cent share in the next five years,” Dr Ngo said. ##
