MHI to Comment on Proposed Rulemaking on Hours of Service Requirements for Commercial Truck Drivers Revisions

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSA) has issued a proposed rule revising the hours-of-service requirements for commercial truck drivers, an effort intended to reduce fatigue and increase safety. The rule is in response to a federal court settlement requiring FMSA to review and publish a final rule by July.

Critical 2011 Industry Initiatives Underway to Protect and Promote the Industry

2011 has gotten off to a quick start for MHI and the industry in Washington, DC as we work with a new Republican House of Representatives and a more compromising Democratic Administration. Already we have made substantial headway in dealing with financial reform, energy issues, and HUD regulatory issues. These are all important issues that all industry members must pay attention to and play an important role.

Now in full control of the House of Representatives, Republicans have made reining in regulations and laws initiated by the Democratic Congress and Administration a priority. Many experts and policymakers are anticipating that businesses should expect to see a slower process in implementing new regulations over the next two years. If this holds true, it bodes well for the industry.

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to Begin Enforcement of the Red Flags Rule on December 31, 2010

MHI Week in ReviewAfter several delays, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will begin enforcement of the Red Flags Rule on December 31, 2010. The FTC issued regulations (the Red Flags Rule) on November 9, 2007 requiring financial institutions and creditors to develop and implement written identity theft prevention programs as part of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) Act of 2003.

MHI Urges Congress to Enact Middle Class Tax Cut Bill – Includes Important Industry Provisions

This week, President Obama announced that the Administration and congressional Republicans had arrived at a “bipartisan agreement” to extend Bush-era tax cuts for two years, jobless benefits for 13 months, and other tax incentives to support business expansion. The compromise measure includes an extension of the energy-efficient new home tax credit program (45L) for two years. This provision is vitally important for manufactured and modular home producers and consumers.

FEMA Published National Disaster Housing Task Force Operations Concept Paper -Teleconference Announced

FEMA’s National Disaster Housing Task Force has just published its Concept of Operations (CONOPS), which describes the Federal coordination of disaster housing assistance preparation in response and recovery. MHI Opposes Elimination of the Home Mortgage Interest Deduction

The mortgage interest for homeowners is falling under the scrutiny of policymakers and economic experts seeking ways to close huge deficits. The new spotlight on the mortgage deduction and other tax expenditures comes as the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, a bi-partisan panel appointed by President Obama, seek ways to reduce the nation’s ballooning debt. MHI is part of a broad business coalition that opposes changing the current Home Mortgage Interest Deduction.

House Passes Tax Extenders Bill, MHI Provisions Included in Senate Proposal

p>On December 2, the House approved legislation (H.R. 4853) to permanently extend the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts for annual income earners up to $250,000. It is unclear if the bill will be brought up by the Senate, where Republican members are adamantly opposed to any tax extension measure that excludes upper income brackets.

Congress Moves Second Continued Funding Resolution

On December 1, the House of Representatives approved a second resolution (CR) to temporarily fund the federal government through December 18. The Senate passed the measure on December 3. The previous CR was set to expire December 3. Congress has yet to complete any work on the 12 annual appropriations measures for FY2011.
