Among the names floated early on in the “Veepstakes” to be presumptive Democratic Party Presidential Nominee Joe Biden has been Senator Kamala Harris (CA-D).
Harris was thought early in 2019 to be a stronger contender for the Democratic Party’s presidential slot. Courthouse News and other media outlets estimated that her announcement speech in Oakland, CA drew some 20,000 on a pre-COVID-1984 Sunday, January 27, 2020.
Harris’ often-cited slap down of Biden in the Democratic debates, her bi-racial African American and South Asian (India) American roots, and other ‘street cred’ were considered a plus in her party’s circles.
But for whatever reasons, despite Harris’ zingers and other reputed strengths, in the crowded field she didn’t get traction with Democratic voters.
How the former prosecutor will play on the left and what she brings to the ticket is an open question, given the surge of Black Lives Matter and Antifa. Amy Walter with the Cook Political Report believes Harris is a ‘safe’ pick for the Biden campaign.
“Former Obama adviser David Axelrod said Kamala Harris” discussing her potential that “Axelrod cites internal data gauging Kamala Harris as ready to be president,” said a report by the right-of-center Washington Examiner.
