According to tbnewswatch.com, Canadian Federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan and Attawapiskat chief Theresa Spence will meet Thursday in Thunder Bay to discuss the current housing crisis and define what role the government will play in the community. Since 2005, more than $90 million has been sent by the government to the community. More than a dozen modular homes have been purchased to help address the housing crisis. According to a CBCNews report, Maple Leaf Homes has received the contract to build 22 homes. Chris McLean, the assistant general manager of Maple Leaf Homes told the reporter the company is accustomed to building homes for cold climates. More lumber in the floor and spacing of pipes above the floor level are among the modifications. About 1,800 people live in Attawapiskat. The federal government has put the reserve under third-party management.
