“This is not supposed to happen” said KHOU’s headline. “Woman killed after stolen 18-wheeler hits home during chase in north Harris County, police say” reported KPRC. These are just some of the various regional news reports with videos that are found in this MHProNews report. San Antonio’s SBG said on October 26, 2021 that “A woman is dead after a stolen 18-wheeler crashed into a mobile home early Tuesday morning.” Following this opening news feature, our MHProNews business-daily left-right headlines and major and manufactured housing specific market snapshots follow.
Per SBG, law enforcement “tried to pull the driver [of the stolen rig] over, but he took off, leading police on a high-speed chase through Northwest Houston. While driving down Lincoln Street, the suspect jumped out of the big rig before it eventually went through a metal fence and crashed into the mobile home with four people inside.”
For those who ponder the strength of a manufactured home, as well as numbers of pre-HUD Code mobile homes, every so many months a car or truck hits headlines after they land in a factory-built home that are often located in a manufactured home community.
Per SBG: “A woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters had to rescue a man trapped under the big rig. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition with non-life threatening injuries.
The two other people were not injured.
The suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment. He is being charged with murder and reckless aggravated assault charges. Police said the suspect has a long criminal history and at the time of the accident, was out on parole for evading with a motor vehicle.”
Additional Information, More MHProNews Analysis and Commentary in Brief
Modern manufactured homes have withstood trucks and cars striking them at considerable speed, as the report below reflects. Properly understood, almost any story – even tragic or bizarre ones – offers some opportunity in disguise.
If only some post-production trade association cared enough about fostering robust growth for our profession. If they did, they would routinely make sure that some knowledgeable, motivated, articulate, and caring professional would turn up for each and every mainstream story, no matter how odd, problematic, or bad it may seem. If only they would make the effort to routinely place any given matter honestly into context for members of the mainstream media. If only they would get the Associated Press (AP) to address terminology or other issues in their annual handbook for reporters.
What a positive and profitable idea that could be, huh? Actually, in fairness, something like that notion was floated years ago by former Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) chairman Tim Williams, who happens to be the president and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway owned 21t Mortgage Corporation.
On the other hand is the comment by perhaps equally notorious Frank Rolfe, who blasted MHI for not engaging properly on good or bad stories.
It is in that context that Darren Krolewski’s comments reported below come into focus. Pro-MHI Krolewski made his view clear on how manufactured housing could move from low gear into a higher one with through better news, understanding, and the proper image to go with it.
As James “Jim” Ayotte aptly put it, this is not rocket science. Editorially, on that focused point, MHProNews concurs. During an affordable housing crisis, every story could be turned into an opportunity.
A mother who is protesting issues in Loudon County VA on Newsmax said on 10.26.2021 the following.
If you make a mistake, admit it and then try to make it right.
That’s arguably the bare minimum that MHI’s leaders should do. Admit past errors, and earnestly pivot. The manufactured home industry’s best days could be ahead. But only if common sense, routine truth-telling, and authentic efforts to grow manufactured housing are put into place.##
