Following a story MHProNews.com posted May 6, 2014 regarding a proposal to replace pre- HUD-Code homes in Bluffton, South Carolina with new affordable modular models, islandpacket.com supports the project but with reservations. Noting the city got in over its financial head with a $1.2 million previous plan that replaced dilapidated structures with six new modular housing units that took too long for the city to sell, the new project of 24 replacement modular homes requires the qualified applicant to buy a home plan. Having found nearly 60 pre-HUD Code homes that need to be replaced, the town will seek grants to underwrite the project. Stressing the importance of the work low income residents perform in this high tourist area, applicants who earn no more than 120 percent of the area’s median income would qualify for assistance in buying one of the homes. The city of Bluffton will not own property or the homes, but its previous experience with a similar project, as islandpacket.com reports, will help in guiding the new proposal. ##
