Calcasieu Parish in LA Approves Manufactured Home Community

mhc thinkstock.com creditMHProNews has learned that the Calcasieu Parish police jurors in far southwestern Louisiana voted 13-1 to approve rezoning from single-family residential to manufactured home community (MHC) for a 336-home site property on U. S. 90 East.

Johnny Guillory, speaking on behalf of His Heirs LLC, called it a manufactured home friendly area because MH outnumber site-built homes six to one. Further, he said the homes on the 60-acre property will be new and available only for purchase, and a 2.5 acre retention pond will divert drainage away from the homes. He added, according to americanpress, “This is affordable housing. Not everybody can afford a brick house.”

Opponents comments included one neighbor who said people who live in MHCs are a “burden to society” and “criminals,” charges refuted by District 4 Police Juror Tony Guillory who said people who are investing their money in a home “are not criminals.” Guillory represents the area where the community will be developed. Other comments were the usual: property values, drainage and traffic congestion.

Another neighbor questioned if there will be enough space to accommodate 336 homes. District 15 Police Juror Les Farnum was the sole no vote, echoing the previous neighbors contention of too dense with all those homes. The equation comes out to about 5.5 homes per acre.

As MHProNews knows, Louisiana is the second highest state in terms of shipments of manufactured homes, bested only by Texas. ##
