The Journal of Commerce in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada reports the largest modular housing project for seniors in B.C. officially opened as the result of the Senior’s Rental Housing (SRH) program. The 36-unit Baker Gardens will also provide housing for persons with disabilities, and will be managed by Kootenays, a mental health advocacy organization under the Canadian Mental Health Organization. An amendment to the Canada-British Columbia Affordable Housing Agreement led to a $365 million plan to develop SRH. The modular development is a collaborative effort of the provincial and federal governments, in conjunction with the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). The city of Cranbrook, which is just north of the Montana border, provided the land and waived development costs. Baker Gardens is one of seven SRH projects the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is supporting with a $425,000 initiative to develop 114 housing units in the Columbia Basin area. Other sites include Baynes Lake, Creston, Golden, Kimberley, Revelstoke and Valemount. The modular units all have an EnerGuide 80 rating and are easily accessible for the residents.
