The town of Faro in the Yukon Territory of Canada wants to move the factory-built homes from land it owns in order to develop a recreational vehicle park, much to the consternation of residents who assert some of their homes are too old to move, according to what cbc.ca tells MHProNews.

A 20-year resident of the Yukon, Darrell Rieger moved to Faro because it’s quiet, cheap and remote. “They want to move the trailers [sic] out and expand that trailer park [sic] into an RV park, to promote tourism,” he says.

Noting the town has offered each resident $5000 to assist with the move, Rieger says that is not sufficient. “We’d be left with the costs of moving the trailers [sic] ourselves, and then the setup, with skirting and all of the hookups and landscaping, and any additions would have to be moved and set back up. It would be an enormous cost for all of us in there to be moved.”

The town’s chief administrative officer, Ian Dunlop, noting Faro is open to discussing options with the community residents, including moving them to another community in the town, nevertheless offers a dim view of the mostly older units. He says, “Some of the older [homes] that are really in very poor condition, well maybe they’re not even in good enough condition to be lived in as it is.”

Rieger says the town should allow the residents to buy the land the homes sit on which would allow the residents the opportunity to borrow money and either upgrade their homes or build small houses. He adds: “Our trailers [sic] won’t even survive the move. They would be junked, and we may as well throw the keys in and just walk away. And we’d lose our homes and every investment we had in there.”

Dunlop, noting the town’s vision is to develop the RV park as a means to attract tourism, says, “We’re just trying to find out what the options are, and try to improve the town. We’re not looking at putting anybody out in the street. We’re not issuing eviction notices.”

The town is holding a public meeting on the issue Feb. 14. ##
