In San Diego, California, the city is cleaning out a now abandoned manufactured home community.
According to SD News, city officials say that the De Anza Cove Mobile Home Park clean up, as part of the De Anza Revitalization Plan, a three-year comprehensive outreach and planning program, continues to be a work in progress.
“No residents remain in the mobile home park [sic],” said city spokesman Tim Graham.
“We anticipate it could take up to a year to clear the site of the remaining mobile homes [sic], approximately 245 units.”
The key part of the story of De Anza Cove goes back to December 2014, when an 11-year legal fight over the closure of the community and the relocation of hundreds of residents came to an end.
Residents and the city, with the help of a trial court judge, agreed to a $29 million settlement, including attorney fees.
“The City Council believes it is time to end the lawsuit, provide residents with reasonable compensation and reimbursement of attorney fees as determined by the judge, and return this park to the people of San Diego,” city attorney Jan Goldsmith said at the time.
City officials say that the goal is to re-imagine, re-purpose and revitalize the 120-acre De Anza Special Study area within Mission Bay Park, with the ultimate goal of creating a recreation destination
But Graham says that exactly what is to become of the former community is still being determined.
“While a public process is currently under way to propose future uses at the site, there will be an interim period where, most likely, passive public use will be accommodated,” said Graham.
“The site is a City Park and Recreation Department asset and will be managed by that department.”
Brian Curry, the current chairman of the Pacific Beach Planning Group, has his own ideas about what should happen.
“The old mobile home park [sic] is indeed the bulk of the De Anza peninsula, so it is part of the larger De Anza revitalization planning effort. In the end, we want ‘public’ amenities for area residents and visitors. This is public land that should be available to the public,” said Curry.
