On September 23, the House of Representatives approved legislation (S. 3814) extending the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through September 30, 2011. The Senate passed the measure on September 21. President Obama is expected to sign the measure into law.
The program has been extended several times since its authorization expired in September 2008. The most recent extension was scheduled to expire September 30, 2010.
In July, the House adopted legislation (H.R. 5114) that would reauthorize the program through FY2015. The Senate has yet to consider the measure.
