A couple in Hermiston, Oregon who own four manufactured homes saw their property tax increase 65 percent from 2013 to 2014 on one of the homes, a 1970 Golden West model at Vista Park Mobile Home Park. Umatilla County Tax Assessor Paul Chalmers says it was an anomaly, that the tax for 2013 on Karen Haga’s property was too low, as eastoregonian tells MHProNews.
He says Oregon law requires counties to submit sales records for all types of property to the state. The state then does a study and sets the tax rolls accordingly. A couple of years ago the state changed from basing the assessment on components of a property, like the number of toilets, to square footage of a property.
Chalmers states the value of the pre HUD Code home in 2012 was nearly $14,000, so based on the state’s calculations, it should have been valued at $15,000 to $16,000 in 2013. Haga does not think she can sell it or move it to another property, which she says would cost around $5,000; and because of its age, it would not likely withstand being moved anyhow.
However, Rachael Reynolds, an analyst in the county assessor’s office, states three homes similar in age and size to Haga’s home sold for $14,000 to $25,000. ##
