In the broader society, there are numbers of those who do not believe in free speech. If you don’t agree with their perspective, you don’t deserve the right to speak or write to the contrary is their view.
The video tonight is by a self-proclaimed Democrat who takes about 7 minutes to make the historic and logical case for giving conservatives their obvious rights to free speech. It makes several interesting points. In this Big Think video, Jonathan Zimmerman argues that the history of debate in the U.S. – of who gets to say what, and how that has evolved – and why it should be taught to every American.
Manufactured housing in the last 7 months is once more a shrinking industry as measured by year-over-year new manufactured home production. Among the reasons? Research, evidence, and reason reveals that a steady diet of misinformation – inside and outside of the industry – are among the causes.
This platform has routinely fact-checked other publishers, trade groups, or bloggers who have promoted or defended the questionable acts by Warren Buffett, Clayton Homes, the Manufactured Housing Institute, or so-called predatory lenders and community operators. The only reason we have the ability to do such analysis is because of the God-given, First Amendment protected right to free speech and of freedom of the press.
We strive to use reason and evidence to shred the head fakes or arguments of purported MHI and Berkshire sycophants such as MHInsider, or the self-contradictory blogger George Allen, who previously blasted Clayton, MHI and predatory community operators, and now defends or promotes them?!?
But we defend their constitutional right to revealingly make illogical fools of themselves.
Ditto to MHI, who arguably falsely claim to represent all segments of factory-built housing, while consistently failing to take the often-obvious steps necessary to defend the industry’s remaining independents. What more proof is needed than 7 months of declining new home shipments, after MHI brazenly claimed momentum?
The point tonight is simple. People must be willing to analyze claims in an objective fashion. As the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, the purpose of education is to learn to think critically.
Free speech is under assault in a variety of ways. We need more public discussion and debates that use genuine arguments, not just repeated falsehoods or emotional manipulation of sincere people and professionals.
HUD Secretary Ben Carson recently made a good, solid case for manufactured housing, which MHI has inexplicably failed to post on their website or promote through their media allies. While tragic, its revealing. Free speech is to be celebrated, cherished, and protected, along with the other rights protected by the Constitution.
As a closing point, only a spread of morality and ethical practices will eradicate deceptive speech. The founders were right about that, and more.
