HousingWire says one of the discussions at a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) meeting with federal regulators centered on giving delinquent homeowners each $21,000 in a cash-for-keys program. The regulators are working with attorneys-general of all 50 states and major lenders to reach a settlement involving faulty affidavits used to foreclose on homes. Advocates of governmental assistance are trying to keep people in their homes while pressuring mortgage servicers to repair faulty foreclosures. Critics are trying to terminate existing federal programs that prevent foreclosure. “Regulators are using the glorified phrase ‘fresh start’ to sell a bad idea,” said Representative Spencer Bachus, (R-Ala.), Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. “It’s not a fresh start, but a rotten finish that is bad for homeowners, bad for taxpayers and bad for our economy.”
