The mayor, one city council member, the city attorney, city manager and a Board of Adjustment member have all resigned their posts in Marquette, Iowa, pop. 462, according to thegazette, possibly in response to the city ‘s inaction on a zoning violation, as MHProNews has learned.
On Wed., Mayor Dave Schneider, in office less than a month, councilwoman Rinda Ferguson and Board of Adjustment’s Tracy Melver all resigned their positions because a manufactured home is in a residential subdivision in violation of zoning, and city council told the city attorney to cease legal proceedings against it.
In his resignation, Schneider said, “I cannot be part of a city government that will not follow through on the oaths of office that we were sworn to uphold.”
City Manager Dean Hilgerson, while not speaking for those who left, says the zoning violation goes back to July, 2015. He had previously announced his intention to leave April 9, 2016 after seven years. James Garrett, the city attorney, had also previously planned his departure, effective April 1, 2016.
Hilgerson added, “These people who resigned said, ‘That’s not right.’ That’s really what it’s about.”
The remaining four council members have not decided how they will fill the empty posts. ##
