The Workforce Housing Coalition (WHC) of Greater Seacoast is considering five parcels of land in York, Maine near the Kittery town line that could be developed as housing for people who earn modest salaries such as laborers, teachers, firemen and police.
WHC Executive Director Ashlee Iber Amenti says the owners of the parcels have all expressed an interest in the possibility, according to seacoastonline, and a meeting is to be held Fri., Oct. 17 for presentation of a proposal put together by volunteer design members and members of the community. Zoning changes will also be up for discussion.
Real estate prices in coastal communities like York can sometimes be driven up by out-of-towners who come seasonally, making housing unaffordable for year-round local residents. Trulia says the average home in York sells for $279,000 to $336,000, while the town’s median household income in 2013 was $59,962.
As MHProNews understands, one clear solution to the perceived housing problem is affordable factory-built homes. Introducing the modern MH industry solution to public officials or investors is a path that benefits everyone involved. ##
