Can press releases to mainstream media make a difference? Before examining a fresh insight that answers that question, let’s look at a related background topic. Manufactured home industry professionals and thought-leaders have talked for years about the value of properly promoting and educating the public on the truths about inherently affordable modern manufactured homes. While manufactured housing (MH) in 2021 was operating at less than 29% of its new home production levels in 1998, by comparison, the recreational vehicle (RV) industry soared during that same timeframe. Why? Many believe that the educational/marketing GoRVing campaign was a key. For instance. In 1998, as the new infographic below reminds readers, MH outsold RVs by some 3 to 2. Fast forward to 2021. RVs outsold MH by almost 6 to 1. Despite years of talk by Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) corporate and staff leaders, everything that has actually occurred has been pinky toe-in-the-water efforts that have been documented to witness declines in production in some cases vs. growth. That sobering fact is made-for-late-night TV satire. Perhaps HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver or other satirists should be told to ponder MHI’s record on promotion and education?
This is NOT about cheerleading embarrassment for manufactured housing. Mocking the industry’s self-proclaimed “leaders” are a favor to all who want to see manufactured housing’s core issues addressed and properly resolved. Note that both of the recent reports below are in the top fraction of 1 percent of the thousands of articles accessed on MHProNews so far this month. It’s readers like you that have voted with their time, browsers, and handheld devices.
On MHProNews and our MHLivingNews sister-site, earn millions of visits and tens of millions of pageviews annually. There is no one in MHVille trade media that claim the same for their ‘news’ blogs. They may lie through their polished and smiling teeth and say they are #1 or something like it. But the number 1 what? Fluffers and verbal gratifiers of the manufactured home industry’s so-called insider corporate and staff leaders at MHI and their state affiliates?
That background noted, starting January 1, 2022, MHProNews/MHLivingNews took our manufactured home industry ‘leadership’ accountability campaign to the next level. We began publishing a series of mainstream media releases. So far, there have been 7 media releases published. What impact has it had on readership?
Let’s look.
Both MHProNews and MHLivingNews were essentially flat in total monthly visits in January 2022 over December 2021. But pageviews went up for both sites in January 2022. For February month-to-date, third-party Webalizer site metrics reports that traffic and pageviews increased significantly over December 2021 and January 2022. MHProNews pageviews increased 123% over 12.2021 month-to-date at 06:08 AM CST on 2.11.2022. Traffic as measured by visits during that same timeframe spiked 143%. MHLivingNews traffic measured by visits rose 125%. Time will tell if this upward trend continues. But what is certain is that our accountability campaign that includes press releases to mainstream media are getting noticed and it has boosted traffic and pageviews alike.
Another outcome is that some reports published months or years ago have for whatever reason surged again. In some cases, it may be because of Joe Rogan related controversies, a podcaster we frankly do not listen to (no offense nor judgement, just a statement of reality) an article from 2020 surged into the top tier as have another report from 2017. Perhaps this phenomenon occurs because MHLivingNews and MHProNews tackle tough topics that bootlickers and brownnosers won’t or don’t. Current as well as older articles are part of that surge in traffic and pageviews.

[Note: MHLivingNews has fewer total articles, but often gets more traffic as measured by pageviews that MHProNews. We typically post on MHLivingNews once weekly, sometimes twice a week. By contrast, we publish on MHProNews daily, sometimes multiple reports daily.]
Note the “Case Against Clayton Homes” surged back to number 1 on MHLivingNews following the media release campaign. Attention from public officials is up too. Also note that based on publicly unchallenged exposés of competing trade publishers and bloggers, any of these articles may get more readers and views than a competitor obtains in a week or a month.
Note that the baker’s dozen reports above (not counting the two withheld for proprietary reasons that MHProNews/MHLivingNews clients can be advised upon) including mostly articles that were published months or years ago. These are examples of why MHProNews/MHLivingNews stand the test of time. Researchers and sincere information seekers find the site, look around, and routinely read multiple articles in each visit. MHProNews has many times the articles that MHLivingNews does, so the pageviews per visit are lower than MHProNews. In December of 2021, for example, MHProNews averaged a stunning 9.22 pageviews per visit. When one ponders the point that our articles are often longer than other publishers, it debunks the notion that people will only read a few hundred words. MHLivingNews experiences 4.88 pageviews per visit month-to-date at the time shown above in February 2021.
Restated, traffic is up and pageviews are up. Information backed by evidence and applied common sense views others can verify is a formula that has worked on our pro-manufactured housing, pro-consumer, and ‘pro-white hat’ brands vs. black hat’ brands platforms for years. Editorially and otherwise, we’re comfortable with the notion that others may not understand why we do what we do. It could be summed up briefly like this. Given that manufactured housing is underperforming, the root causes of that underperformance must be addressed in order for the industry to achieve its true potential.
Sugar and thinly veiled pitches may taste sweet for a while. But when manufactured housing is operating at only some 29% of its last highwater mark of 1998, clearly something is wrong. The population has grown since then. Quality, eye appeal, and installation standards are routinely up. Favorable legislation for manufactured housing has passed Congress. So why is MHI talking about what they are working on next when the existing favorable legislation is gathering dust in a file or is digitally ignored too? Mocking the obvious ought to be made obvious. The point that MHInsider, MHReview, and other manufactured housing industry bloggers won’t tackle such issues head on may well explain why the evidence reflects our dominance, despite their gleaming claims.
Speaking the truth with evidence that names names is how the industry can set itself free from the shackles and chains that have weighted manufactured housing down. Those chains also often witness the harm done to customers at the hands of black hats. Those black hats and posturing paltering mouthpieces who don’t perform merit mocking too!
February Month To Date as of 2.11.2022 – 9700 Total Referrers. Top 12 Reports as of 6:08 AM CST were as follows. [It is not yet mid-month. Note that out of some 20,000 reports posted online, by the end of a given month, often 15,000 or more referral paths access thousands of those reports, per Webalizer].
These are the reports that readers who are often like yourself have made the top so far. Any of them likely outpaces a week or more of total trade ‘news’ readership elsewhere. The fact that they won’t debate in public electronically or face to face speaks volumes. When the facts go against you, and the audience has some knowledge, it is difficult to persuade them of how great MHI and their mouthpieces are doing when it is obvious that they have failed consumers and white hat brands alike. If they’d like to debate, bring it on. Because we’ve documented years of their ducking the troubling realities in MHVille.
But in fairness, Darren Krolewski had a point. The bad news coming out of manufactured housing is a weight on the industry. ‘One challenge is not enough positive news about manufactured housing to counter the negative news’ – said Krolewski. But where does that bad news routinely arise? From among the ‘prominent’ and ‘award winning’ members of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and/or their state affiliates. You can’t make it up, but you can mock their brazen behavior until public officials and/or plaintiffs attorneys’ step in and finally lower the boom on them.
The tip to white hats?
If the industry botches this opportunity to grow in a robust fashion during an affordable housing crisis when there are so many potential tools to educate the public and public officials, shame on those who claim to be ‘leaders’ at MHI. The modest but fact, evidence, and common-sense driven 2022 media releases by MHProNews/MHLivingNews are documented to be gaining traction.
Beyond messaging that should spell out the realities of modern manufactured homes vs. the outdated myths or bad actor reputation caused by ‘black hats’ that are often MHI and/or MHI state affiliate members, there are good federal laws that MHI claims to want enforced. But where is the legal action by MHI they could deploy see to get favorable federal laws enforced?

Talk isn’t always cheap. Sometimes talk without matched action is expensive. There are tens of billions of dollars in potential revenues being left on the table every year because good federal laws aren’t being properly enforced.
It’s time to walk the talk or face the music of accountability for poor performance and often bad behavior. White hat tip? Work with other organizations and companies that care about doing things correctly. If your trade group – say, MHI – isn’t doing what it should, then it is time to join or form new structures.
White Hat Investors: your tip? There are hundreds of billions of dollars needed in affordable housing. Manufactured housing is the most proven form of affordable housing. Why is it that several ‘top’ and ‘award winning’ MHI brands connected to ‘black hat’ or predatory behavior? Why doesn’t MHI reign in their own bad actors? Those questions are probed in a range of reports on our websites. That said, in a dollars and cents fashion, there are opportunities to create new communities, new factories, and go toe-to-toe with brands that have sullied their own names. That this can be done profitably is demonstrated by MHI members own investor relations pitch presentations. Doing manufactured housing right instead of doing it halfway or wrong is a key part of the solution to the affordable housing crisis.
A top official at an MHI member brand has told MHProNews that they have looked at buying competitors but have found that it makes more financial sense to develop new production centers. Something similar can be said about retail or certain other aspects of the industry. A great example of the truth of that claim is from modular home builder S2A. They have announced their plans to build dozens of new factories.
The truth is there to be seen, learned, and profited from – so long as someone is willing to look beyond the MHI talking points and their mouthpieces.
