The top referral website to the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) for May-July 2024 was the Cavco Industries (CVCO investor page, according to SimilarWeb. The specifics on that and more items of importance to investors, public officials, manufactured housing industry pros, researchers and others peering into the often-opaque world of manufactured housing will be examined in this report with analysis based on engagement/traffic data and related statistics. Before diving into insights about the manufactured housing industry including, but not limited to MHI, per SimilarWeb, some context, definitions and comparisons are in order.
According to Webalizer 2.23, in July 2024 there were an impressive total “of 72558 Total Referrers” to the primary cPanel serving the large MHProNews website. According to Gemini AI: “In Webalizer, a referrer is a URL [i.e.: web address] that leads a user to a website or causes the browser to request something from the server.” Google Help further says: “The referrer is the webpage that sends visitors to your site using a link. In other words, it’s the webpage that a person was on right before they landed on your [website’s] page.” Using only the data from that same cPanel per Webalizer, the runaway majority of initial hits (landing page) for visitors to MHProNews in July were the home page, a common occurrence for most websites. Those total homepage hits in July 2024 of 1629357 represented 49.76% of traffic recorded by the main cPanel, which is another way of saying that about half of the traffic that comes to MHProNews goes to a specific article/item, and the other half of the traffic goes to the home page before proceeding to articles.
The typical visitor of MHProNews per Webalizer clicked on some 5.30 pages per visit before leaving MHProNews. By comparison, according to data from SimilarWeb, the ManufacturedHousing.org (i.e.: Manufactured Housing Institute or MHI website) had only 1.49 pageviews per visit. MHI averaged only 7,795 total visits per month between May-July 2024. The average length of each visit to MHI, stated SimilarWeb, is a scant 00:00:24 (24 seconds).
To make the comparison between MHI and MHProNews traffic and visitor engagement even more stark, here is some math: 5.30/1.49 = 3.55704697987. That means that for every pageview MHI gets per visitor, MHProNews get 3.56 times the number of pageviews. So, apparently a visitor to MHProNews’ homepage may spend more time just looking at the array of topics and articles on manufactured housing and related topics before going to a specific article than a visitor to MHI spends on their site before bouncing out to something on a different website that offers meatier information worthy of a visitor’s time.
Several of these facts ought to be an embarrassment to MHI. Why?
Because for the same time period explored for MHI (May-July 2024), the National Association of Realtors (NAR.Realtor web address) earned many times more visits in a day than MHI gets in 91 days.
NAR garnered some 3.494M (3,494,000) visits from May-July 2024. The math for a comparison looks like this: 3,494,000/91=38395.6043956. That means NAR obtained about 38,396 visitors a day vs. 23,386 visits from May-July 2024, or about 7,795 visits per month. The math looks like this: 7,795/30.5 =255.573770492.
Which means MHI reportedly gets only about 256 visitors a day. They claim to have 1000 member companies/organizations. Those companies and organizations represent tens of thousands of people. Why don’t they bother to visit the MHI website? Pathetic, right?
Embarrassing. Or perhaps it should be, if MHI leaders are capable of feeling embarrassment.
NAR.Realtor dwarfs MHI, understandably so. Among the possible reasons is that NAR provides visitors/the public with meaty insights and information. By comparison, as some of the articles linked below explore in detail, MHI may provide demonstrably misleading, incomplete, or errant claims rather than accurate facts or actionable intelligence. MHI is so busy patting their own back that they apparently lose the visitors’ interest. That’s what less than 1.5 pageviews per visit obviously means.
NAR is also bigger than MHProNews’ traffic, but conventional housing is a much bigger market than manufactured housing. Stating the obvious, NAR also has a far bigger budget.
MHProNews also overshadows MHI, per the data shown which speaks volumes about both their site and ours. Per Webalizer, which Google’s AI powered Gemini explains below is the most accurate data for the site, is the following insight. The top article on MHProNews obtained 33204 hits in July 2024. Think about that for a moment. One article on MHProNews (see that top article of interest to manufactured housing pros) garnered more hits than all of the total visits to MHI for the three months from May-July 2024. Embarrassing for MHI but revealing as to the dominance of MHProNews earned among manufactured housing industry readers and others peering into the issues of interest involving inherently affordable manufactured homes.
In fairness, perhaps SimilarWeb is mistaken about MHI. But if so, where are MHI’s articles like this one? Which gets back to a concern previously raised by Bing’s AI powered Copilot. Copilot said MHI lacks transparency.
Worse still, Copilot accused MHI of “Orwellian” communications and of making statements that appeared to be a lie, false, and misleading. As more and more of the manufactured housing industry’s professionals begin to grasp the reality of what is occurring at MHI and in their profession, of course, there are likely to be less interest in what MHI has to say among industry members. Yes, the public might still visit MHI, until they go to the site and discover there isn’t enough meat there to satisfy their interests. Which is why the typical visitor leaves after less than 1.5 total pageviews and in only 24 seconds. Embarrassing. But isn’t that part of the cost to MHI’s credibility by providing self-serving fluff and misinformation?
There is much more to learn from the latest engagement data. Such as what are the top 30 articles/reports which attracted the most manufactured housing industry focused readers? But before looking into that in Part I, let’s continue with this overview.
So, the 72558 Total Referrers MHProNews recorded by Webalizer in July may seem curiously high compared to MHI, but the following is per SimilarWeb, which said that MHI’s top referrer is the Cavco Industries website.
Referrals
Referrals makes up 5.4% of website traffic
Facts and data ought to lead to further questions and analysis. For example: if only 5.4% of MHI’s traffic comes from referrals, and MHI claims over 1,000 members, with several of those companies employing thousands or tens of thousands, it seems that not much traffic is coming from MHI’s own members. Embarrassing, right?
Note that above SimilarWeb indicated that traffic is from the investor.Cavco.com. That ought to raise a cautionary flag. Are actual or potential investors expecting accurate info from MHI?
Notice that perhaps the key statement from Gemini below, for purposes of this report with respect to MHProNews and MHI are concerned, is this: “Webalizer provides the most accurate data, but only for the specific server it monitors.”
That said, before proceeding consider the following from left-leaning Google’s AI powered Gemini on 8.8.2024.
It is my understanding that the most accurate information that you can get about a website’s traffic would be from information generated by server/cPanel, such as what is provided by Webalizer on millions of websites, correct? If that server/cPanel data is more accurate, then why does SimilarWeb sometimes dramatically understate the data on a website such a ManufacturedHomeProNews.com? Is SimilarWeb routinely reliable? When SimilarWeb glitches, what explains the glitch? Because Webalizer’s cPanel visitor engagement stats indicates far more traffic for MHProNews than SimilarWeb has at various times stated.
You’re partially correct. Here’s a breakdown:
Webalizer:
- Pros: Provides very accurate data for the specific server it’s installed on. It directly analyzes log files from the website, capturing every visitor request.
- Cons:
- Limited scope: It only shows traffic for the server it’s on, not the entire website (if spread across multiple servers).
- Doesn’t provide traffic source: It can’t tell you where visitors came from (search, social media etc.).
SimilarWeb:
- Pros: Provides a broader view of website traffic, including:
- Estimated visits: Uses complex algorithms and data collection techniques to estimate total traffic.
- Traffic sources: Shows where visitors come from (search, social media etc.).
- Competitive analysis: Compares a website to similar ones.
- Cons:
- Estimated data: Numbers aren’t as precise as server logs.
- May not be perfect: Accuracy can vary depending on website size and complexity.
Here’s why SimilarWeb might underestimate ManufacturedHomeProNews.com traffic:
- Smaller website: SimilarWeb’s accuracy improves with high-traffic websites. For MHProNews, the estimates might be less reliable.
- Data collection methods: SimilarWeb gathers data from various sources, and their algorithms might not capture all traffic sources perfectly for MHProNews.
- Technical issues: Occasionally, glitches in SimilarWeb’s data collection or processing can lead to underestimates.
Overall:
- Webalizer provides the most accurate data, but only for the specific server it monitors.
- SimilarWeb offers a broader view of website traffic and trends, but with estimations.
Recommendations:
- Consider using both tools. Webalizer for precise server data, SimilarWeb for broader traffic insights and comparisons.
- When SimilarWeb seems to significantly understate traffic, compare it to other traffic estimation tools (e.g., SEMrush, Alexa) to see if the discrepancy is consistent.
- If concerned about SimilarWeb’s accuracy, contact their support for clarification.
Remember, traffic data can be complex and influenced by various factors. A combination of tools and critical analysis can give you a more complete picture. …”
So, notice that the ‘drawback or “con” to Webalizer data, said Gemini, is that it is useful only for the website or part of the website to which that data is accessing. But that is hardly a ‘con’ if what someone wants is accurate information FOR that website, or for some specific part(s) of a website.
From the above, per Gemini a “con” to Webalizer is that it is “limited” to the specific server: “Limited scope: It only shows traffic for the server it’s on, not the entire website (if spread across multiple servers).” As MHProNews has previously disclosed, for articles on engagement and the most popular reports (like this one), we use only the largest cPanel data, not the other dozen that serve our website. So, our traffic is greater than what is stated. The following is accurate for the server stats queried. But the totals are greater because we what follows is from the main server, not the dozen others.
A few more disclosures and examples to illustrate are warranted. There are some items reported by cPanel stats from Webalizer that follow which are omitted for proprietary reasons. For example, there are categories that are reported by Webalizer such as the home page (omitted in the top 30 that follow) categories of articles vs. specific articles (example: Cutting Edge, Industry in Focus, etc.). Those are not shown, nor are referrals from Google or websites other than MHProNews.
So, what is shown below are the most popular articles in July as ranked by the cPanel data per Webalizer on the MHProNews website. These most popular articles as determined by visitors like you and tens of thousands of others. More specifically, Webalizer said that in July 2024 on this one cPanel MHProNews had 239959 total visits. There were 1273945 total pageviews reported by that one cPanel (out of over a dozen cPanels that support our website’s backend architecture).
So, presuming the accuracy of SimilarWeb to MHI, in July alone, MHProNews had more than 10 times the visits for that month as MHI had for the quarter from May-July 2024. Here is the math: 239959/23386=10.2607970581. We hereby challenge MHI, and/or their blogging/trade media surrogates, to publish similar data and insights. Based on years of past experiences in our publishing similar such comparison reports, don’t hold your breath waiting for MHI et al to be forthcoming publicly with their stats.
With all that said, next let’s pivot in Part I to the headline “Top 30” (plus some bonuses) before proceeding to more insights about the manufactured housing industry, MHI, or prominent MHI member companies like Cavco in Part II.
The date an article was published is shown in the top left next to the ranking. Once again, let’s disclose that two articles are withheld for proprietary reasons. Otherwise, with the disclaimers as noted, the ranking is as shown.
The date is interesting for several reasons. Meaty articles on MHProNews often stay of interest to industry pros and/or researchers for weeks, months, or even years after they are first published. It is different than fluff and stuff found elsewhere in MHVille. Who cares if MHI is patting their own back time and time again? Apparently, not many.
Note that the top article mentioned above with 33204 hits is the first one below. Over a third of the month had elapsed, but that article led the rest in engagement by readers like you.

Part II – Additional Information with More MHProNews Analysis and Commentary
In no particular order of importance are the following facts, screen shots, insights, and observations.
1) The screen capture below illustrates the points made in the preface above about MHI and their sluggish traffic. 7795 visits per month is about 256 average numbers of visitors a day. Embarrassing, if MHI actually cared about advancing the industry’s growth as they claim.
To see the image below in a larger or full size, depending on your device,
you can click the image and follow the prompts. Or click here.
2) With that in mind, see yesterday’s report. MHI’s arguably faux claims, and that of several of their prominent members, could become the subject of legal action.
3) MHProNews freely admits that NAR’s website is bigger and gets more traffic than ours. Facts are what they are. But compare MHProNews’ website to MHI, and based upon known information, we dwarf them. Why?
To see the image below in a larger or full size, depending on your device,
you can click the image and follow the prompts. Or click here.
4) Apparently, MHProNews dominates in our categories because for years we have provided authentic manufactured housing “Industry News, Tips, and Views Pros Can Use.” © We pack facts, evidence, and expert analysis into articles on topics that are often not found elsewhere in MHVille. We provide details that allow someone to double check what we reported and provided commentary on. We don’t insult our reader’s intelligence.
You don’t have to take our word on it. Just look at that list of topics that were so popular in July 2024. Check some of those against MHI’s ‘news’ articles, or any other MHI-linked bloggers or trade publisher. It becomes quickly obvious that we cover issues better, or in many instances, they don’t cover the issues at all. Almost by default, we are better. But again, see for yourself.
5) In fairness, Kurt Kelley’s MHReview does provide some useful articles, but most of their content is in line with the ‘insiders’ at MHI’s party line. And they are a quarterly, not a daily, weekly or even monthly. Even if someone else covers something of interest, our fact-checks of their content is apparently more interesting than their original articles, because they roar on our site and seem to snore on theirs.
6) The above may from time to time seem to say something that is less than flattering to MHI, or something/company/person linked to MHI. But they are so inconsistent, if they do so at all, that they don’t build traction with the broader industry audience. Brownnosers often attract those like themselves. Birds of a feather, flock together. And again, you don’t have to take our word for it, they have said so themselves.
So, the known traffic data indicates MHProNews’ superiority, based on attracting the larger and broader audience. Beyond that, our would-be rivals have said we are superior in words like those shown above.
