“Merriam-Webster, America’s oldest dictionary publisher, has just chosen “gaslighting” as its word of the year. Searches on its website for the word have spiked by 1,740% in 2022, according to the company. Gaslighting is the act or practice of grossly misleading someone, especially for one’s own advantage.” So said the BBC on 11.30.2022, based on a statement made by Merriam-Webster. The Washington Post, the Hill, and an array of other media have covered this same announcement by the dictionary publisher. Here is more of what Merriam-Webster said, followed by an MHProNews analysis and commentary.
In this age of misinformation—of “fake news,” conspiracy theories, Twitter trolls, and deepfakes—gaslighting has emerged as a word for our time.
A driver of disorientation and mistrust, gaslighting is “the act or practice of grossly misleading someone especially for one’s own advantage.” 2022 saw a 1740% increase in lookups for gaslighting, with high interest throughout the year.
Its origins are colorful: the term comes from the title of a 1938 play and the movie based on that play, the plot of which involves a man attempting to make his wife believe that she is going insane. His mysterious activities in the attic cause the house’s gas lights to dim, but he insists to his wife that the lights are not dimming and that she can’t trust her own perceptions.
When gaslighting was first used in the mid 20th century it referred to a kind of deception like that in the movie. We define this use as:
: psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, uncertainty of one’s emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator
But in recent years, we have seen the meaning of gaslighting refer also to something simpler and broader: “the act or practice of grossly misleading someone, especially for a personal advantage.” In this use, the word is at home with other terms relating to modern forms of deception and manipulation, such as fake news, deepfake, and artificial intelligence.
The idea of a deliberate conspiracy to mislead has made gaslighting useful in describing lies that are part of a larger plan. Unlike lying, which tends to be between individuals, and fraud, which tends to involve organizations, gaslighting applies in both personal and political contexts. It’s at home in formal and technical writing as well as in colloquial use:
- Patients who have felt that their symptoms were inappropriately dismissed as minor or primarily psychological by doctors are using the term “medical gaslighting” to describe their experiences and sharing their stories.— The New York Times, 28 March 2022
- The “I’m sorry you feel that way” approach, along with avoiding an argument in lieu of admitting fault, is good old fashioned gaslighting. — Psychology Today, 29 March 2022
- My Committee’s investigation leaves no doubt that, in the words of one company official, Big Oil is ‘gaslighting’ the public. These companies claim they are part of the solution to climate change, but internal documents reveal that they are continuing with business as usual. — Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, 14 September 2022
- After their fight awkwardly cleared the daybed, the two parted ways and Genevieve caught Victoria up on the unexpected blowout. “He told me I’m gaslighting I’ve never even been told that in my life,” Gen said. “Yeah that’s a big word to use… He doesn’t know what that means. He’s just using a buzzword, he’s stupid. He’s dumb,” Victoria replied. — Nicole Gallucci, Decider(decider.com), 2 November 2022
English has plenty of ways to say “lie,” from neutral terms like falsehood and untruth to the straightforward deceitfulness and the formally euphemistic prevarication and dissemble, to the innocuous-sounding fib. And the Cold War brought us the espionage-tinged disinformation.
In recent years, with the vast increase in channels and technologies used to mislead, gaslighting has become the favored word for the perception of deception. This is why (trust us!) it has earned its place as our Word of the Year.”
Not forgetting that gaslighting and paltering ought to be considered in tandem, let’s consider the next word announced by Merriam-Webster – because their #2 word of the year – is also revealing. “Oligarch.”
Oligarch
With the Russian invasion of Ukraine, countries including the U.S. and United Kingdom placed sanctions on Russian oligarchs and their families. Lookups for oligarch spiked 621% in early March 2022.
In its Greek roots oligarchy literally means “rule by the few.” In English the word can carry the same meaning, but it also has a meaning specific to Russia and other countries that succeeded the Soviet Union:
: one of a class of individuals who through private acquisition of state assets amassed great wealth that is stored especially in foreign accounts and properties and who typically maintain close links to the highest government circles …”
Additional Information with More MHProNews Analysis and Commentary
It may be that the Vladimir Putin led Russian invasion of Ukraine sparked an upsurge in the online search for the term “oligarch,” but it is hardly a case of that being the only use of the word in an American or international context. It could be a case of gaslighting to believe that only Russia has oligarchs. The U.S., and American professions, has its examples too.
“Rule by the few” is precisely a definition for what occurs in wide segments of the American Republic. Yes, people vote. But months before a given vote, the system is often manipulated to limit the choices of those running for office. So, it isn’t that voting doesn’t matter, of course it can count, but a greater focus has to be given to the primary process and making sure good candidates run and can win.
But for years, the U.S. has had recent as well as past examples of the once notable old Soviet Communist line, it isn’t who votes that counts as much as who counts the votes. In the second quote below, the bold and italicized emphasis has been added by MHProNews.
More specifically, according to Oxford Reference, are these two thoughts from the dictatorial Soviet (Russian) Communist leader, Joseph Stalin “1879–1953”
- I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this—who will count the votes, and how.
– said in 1923; Boris Bazhanov The Memoirs of Stalin’s Former Secretary (1992); see Stoppard
- The State is an instrument in the hands of the ruling class, used to break the resistance of the adversaries of that class.
– Foundations of Leninism (1924) section 4/6
That’s a description of what has been subtly occurring in the U.S. for decades. Who says? Start with Warren Buffett, once thought to be the world’s richest man, currently ranked about #5 depending on the list one uses (e.g.: per Visual Capitalist).
Whenever old man Buffett finally dies (born on August 30, 1930, or currently age 92 years, per left-leaning Wikipedia), Buffettism is likely to live on. At least, that is their stated goal. Indeed, his “castle and moat” thinking on ways to limit competition was discussed at length by Kevin Clayton, who asserted that it is preached by Buffett at Clayton Homes. Buffett has personally said it the moat method is preached to all Berkshire Hathaway owned businesses.
What era does the castle and moat refer generally refer to, one might ask? The feudal period of European history.
Feudalism was embedded in Warren’s son Peter Buffett’s discussion of the sobering truth behind numbers of nonprofits and foundations. Peter Buffett has described and discussed philanthro-feudalism, also known as philanthro-capitalism and the “Charitable Industrial Complex.”
Philanthro-feudalism, philanthro-capitalism, and the Charitable Industrial Complex can also be tools for gaslighting used by oligarchs. Under the guise of ‘doing good,’ what may actually be occurring are ways of bolstering the image of the person/organization being projected as a charity or advocacy. While some may indeed benefit, the core problem the organization or group claims to be working to ‘help’ goes unsolved. Meanwhile, contributions to that nonprofit may be tax deductible while also advancing the financial and political interests of the donor(s).
Earlier this week, MHProNews did a feature on Flagship Communities. Among the facts that emerged is that the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which still uses the old name of SSK Communities, currently has that firm with a “F” rating. Flagship has as one of its corporate leaders Nathan Smith, a former Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) chairman who has described himself as very active in Democratic party politics. After what might be described as a less than flattering fact-packed and evidenced based review of Flagship that included Smith, what did MHI do? It featured in their most recent email to members a seemingly charitable activity by Flagship! A contemporary example of gaslighting on behalf of an MHI oligarch at its finest!
The truth is routinely hiding in plain sight on a range of issues. MHI has demonstrated, and themselves pat their own backs for their access to high level public officials. But in that brazen posturing or gaslighting effort, what thoughtful individuals who actually want to see good things get done (as opposed to merely being talked about), one should simply ask. Why is it that MHI has failed to achieve its own stated goals on zoning/placement or more competitive financing for all of the 21st century, when the laws that mandate those issues are already in place?
To find the truth in an era of gaslighting and paltering, one must learn to look at various claims objectively. Because this pattern isn’t just occurring in manufactured housing. Joe Biden said it, consolidation of industries is part of a larger pattern. In order to mask or mute the outrage of what that means to the American Dream of millions, the feudalistic style oligarchs must appear to be doing good.
- 1) Follow the money trail. See who benefits from the status quo, why and how.
- 2) Pay more attention to what people or organizations do than to what they say.
- 3) Be mindful of paltering, gaslighting, projecting (evil onto others that the source is guilty of themselves) or other various types of emotional and other kinds of manipulation.
- 4) Be aware of how your own habits, trusting nature, or beliefs may be manipulated in a way that they are used against you. For example, supporting or attending a trade group that claims to be working for “all segments” of the industry when they are actually working for a few insiders.
- 5) Take the time to understand historic patterns, because the history is routinely revealing of the truth. A classic example is linked below, HUD researchers admit that 50 years of promises on affordable housing remain illusory. What are all those billions going for and who benefits from the status quo? Because those who yearn for affordable home ownership are buying into decades of unkept promises.
There is always more to know. Gaslighting can be another way to describe the effects of propaganda. But the powerful lessons from gaslighting and ‘rule by the few’ (i.e.: by oligarchs) was too rich to pass up in today’s installment of “News through the lens of manufactured homes and factory-built housing,” © with “Industry News Tips, and Views Pros Can Use” © that provides “Intelligence for Your MHLife” ©. Now that you know more about these issues, share them – as so many others do – with their peers, friends, investors, public officials, and others.
Because until the gaslighting and manipulative methods of the oligarchs and their henchmen are understood, they can’t be rooted out.
Because the good news for today is this. The laws needed to fix what’s wrong in manufactured housing already exist. They only have to be properly enforced, or put to work. The laws needed to break up the monopolists and prosecute them as warranted also already exist. Don’t buy into the deception and misdirection cover story that new laws are needed. What amounts to feudalistic style oligarchs have existed in America for over 150 years. Several of the necessary laws were enacted then, but others have emerged since. The bureaucracies are routinely in the de facto hands of those they are supposed to regulate. A general house cleaning of Washington, D.C. is needed. There is plenty of work to do, but the work would be rewarding. The risk of not doing the work is to great. Let’s get busy recapturing and surpassing the past glory days of our profession. Let’s make the American Dream come an unmanipulated free enterprise system come to life for millions of the marginalized and disadvantaged. Don’t buy into the paltering, lies, and associated gaslighting. Because in an odd twist of fate, it is the feudalistic oligarchs who are doing the gaslighting in order to save their own necks. ##
