Following a story MHProNews published Aug. 19, 2015 regarding a container housing project for the homeless in Honolulu, Mayor Kirk Caldwell now proposes a temporary modular housing facility for homeless families on the Leeward Coast.
“There are not enough sites for families and as we do our enforcement actions, we do not want to enforce in areas where families are that don’t have a place to go,” Caldwell told KITV4. “This is about housing the folks in Waianae in Waianae in a very nice, modular type setting.”
Where residents in the modular container homes for the homeless at Sand Island share bathroom and kitchen facilities, the 15-20 modular homes for the families will each have their own kitchens and bath facilities. A community space and garden may also be included. Latest figures indicate there are 22 unsheltered family households along the Waianae.
The proposed 1.1-acre site for the modular units will cost $300,000, while the homes themselves are pegged at $2 million. The city will soon present plans to the Nanakuli and Waianae neighborhood boards. ##
