The post shown below by Tampa Free Press about the suit by “hundreds of local papers” suing Facebook and Google for their alleged advertising monopoly should be of keen interest to all manufactured housing industry professionals and affordable housing advocates. Recall that in 2015, Doug Ryan with what today is known as Prosperity Now, publicly accused Clayton Homes of engaging in a monopoly. Ryan cited the Manufactured Housing Institute as giving Clayton Homes cover. Democratic lawmakers that included Maxine Waters (CA-D) weighed in similarly claiming a “near monopoly” by Clayton. They asked the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Department of Justice (DoJ) to weigh in. As antitrust and concerns over monopolization increases in the U.S. and abroad, it would be journalistic malpractice to ignore that possibility occurring in manufactured housing. While some in our industry’s trade may commit such malpractice, MHProNews will continue to press the issue in reports, fact-checks, analysis and commentary such as this.
Per left-leaning Wikipedia, “The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 is a United States antitrust law which prescribes the rule of free competition among those engaged in commerce. It was passed by Congress and is named for Senator John Sherman, its principal author.”
On this date, 2.16.2022, a search for phrase that follows – hundreds of newspapers suing Google and Facebook ad monopoly – reveals the following top five results in this sequence.

Hundreds Of Local Papers Are Suing Facebook And Google For Alleged Ad Monopolies
Daily Caller News Foundation December 7, 2021
Ailan Evans
Small-town and local newspapers across the country are suing Google and Facebook, alleging that the tech giants hold a monopoly in digital advertising.
Over two hundred publications have sued the tech companies this year, according to a review by Axios, alleging the dominance of Facebook and Google in digital advertising markets have cut into their revenue.
The lawsuits are led by Doug Reynolds, the managing partner of HD Media, which owns several newspapers in West Virginia, who began filing complaints with a coalition of antitrust lawyers from Farrell and Fuller, Fitzsimmons Law Firm, Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, and Herman Jones LLP, Axios reported.
Reynolds first sued Google and Facebook in January, alleging that the tech giants’ monopolies were contributing to the death of the newspaper industry, The Wall Street Journal reported.
“These companies are more powerful than Standard Oil in its heyday, so no one wants to be the first to take them on,” Reynolds told the WSJ at the time. “We felt the political and legal climate have moved in our favor and are ready to go ahead.”
The complaint alleged that Google and Facebook “conspired” to rig bids for digital advertising contracts in a secret deal known as “Jedi Blue,” thereby cementing their monopoly power in the ad market. The existence of the deal was first alleged in an antitrust complaint filed by several state attorneys general led by Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Reynolds and his coalition of attorneys have agreed to represent other newspapers filing similar antitrust lawsuits.
The goal of the complaints is to “establish a new system going forward in which newspapers aren’t just competitive again, but can thrive,” Clayton Fitzsimmons, one of the lawyers representing the papers, told Axios. ##

To grasp the implications of Facebook-Google antitrust effort for the manufactured housing industry, one should first understand the risks involved.
On this date, the RushingGuice.com law firm said, with emphasis in the original: “Criminal enforcement of the Sherman Act is the responsibility of the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). For offenses committed on or after June 22, 2004, the maximum corporate fine is $100 million, the maximum individual fine is $1 million and the maximum jail term is 10 years.”
Glenn Greenwald is an attorney turned award winning independent journalist. His message to his Substack platform’s subscribers this morning described the “grueling and demanding work of writing the in-depth reporting and analysis that we hope and believe characterizes this page.” Quite so. For anyone who has attempted to produce meaningful reports that matter for manufactured housing professionals, homeowners, and consumers and others 7 days a week, it won’t take long to grasp Greenwald’s point. He mentioned “with so much mischief going on: from Canada’s invocation of shockingly authoritarian powers to crush the trucker’s movement, to the avalanche of multi-pronged propaganda from many directions over Ukraine.” MHProNews has cited CNN and Newsmax on the Ukraine matter and has reported on the truckers too. Those reading this daily business news report on MHProNews can stay surprisingly informed from both ends of the political/media spectrum.
As noted above, Doug Ryan, Representative Maxine Waters and her colleagues, and even bobbing-and-weaving back and forth in, out, and back into the MHI camp blogger George Allen have alleged monopolization in manufactured housing.
Oddly, Allen – listed as a contributing editor for MHInsider – are among those who haven’t raised this issue with the necessary detail, evidence and implications recently, if ever. To get such insights in recent years within the confines of MHVille, one must turn to MHProNews/MHLivingNews.
The Tampa Free Press reported on that issue. Perhaps they won’t be too concerned to make factual and commonsense op-eds on manufactured housing related topics? Oh, they already have.
As teasers, a new document involving MHI has been provided by a tipster. A wrinkle in manufactured housing connected legal issues have also been provided to MHProNews.
Keep in mind that MHProNews has two sources who told MHProNews that during the Trump Administration, antitrust attorneys in the Department of Justice discussed possible antitrust action that included MHI members, including Clayton Homes. Will the Biden Administration pick that ball up and run with it?
Stay tuned for what’s ahead here, through mainstream news releases, and perhaps more of interest to some in the manufactured housing industry and beyond to come at Tampa Free Press too.
