From Illinois and the Orion Gazette comes a story about the Lustron Home. Workers there recently installed siding on a home made by Lustron, a prefabricated house was built with enamel-covered steel panels on the outside and more steel panels on the inside. Built in 1948 at the company’s plant in Columbus, Ohio, fewer than 400 of the Lustron houses remain in Illinois. As the article notes, Lustron Homes never made a profit. The company closed in 1950 after manufacturing only 2,500 homes, the remaining of which are on the list of National Historic Places.
