Joe Kelly at the Iowa Manufactured Housing Association sent along a report from the Des Moines Register that indicated a third of manufactured homes have unpaid taxes in Polk County. According to the report from County Treasurer Mary Maloney, one-third of the 4,087 manufactured homes in that county have unpaid property taxes. Moreover, taxes are overdue on four of five pre-HUD code homes built before 1976. There are indications the problem is not confined to one area, either. Statewide its estimated failure to pay annual taxes and transfer titles when homes are sold presents a loss to state taxpayers of at least $2.5 million. Some community owners are selling homes without going through the proper procedures to get a title, leaving many low-income Iowans with the faulty belief they own their home. The article also states most communities with newer homes are in compliance.
