The Sulphur Land Use Commission in Sulphur, Louisiana declined to allow a manufactured home (MH) to be sited on a prepared lot because they were initially told it was a modular home, which would have been acceptable. Public Works official Keith Berry said the property would have to be re-zoned from Residential to Mixed Residential.
While the manufactured homes of today are made far better than the mobile homes of days past, says Public Works Director Mike Daigle, they still do not conform to the building codes and standards of local and state jurisdictions, according to what sulphurdailynews tells MHProNews.
The woman paid over $100,000 for the MH—which has been ready for over two months–and obtained a permit to put down the slab. She also has 20 signatures from neighbors who do not object to the home, but Daigle said they could do a spot zoning, which would allow the home to be sited, but that might establish a precedent allowing other MH in the neighborhood. The city is trying to forestall placement of manufactured homes. ##
