Following a story MHProNews last published July 2, 2014 regarding a plan by the Affordable Housing Committee of Bluffton, South Carolina to offer assistance to ten qualified residents to purchase modular homes, the town is now considering expanding its Small Home Series program, since eleven people have inquired about the homes. Unlike the Wharf Street Project MHProNews reported on Nov. 2, 2011 whereby the city built and then sold six modular homes, the committee is considering incentivizing developers to include affordable housing in new developments. The goal of the program is to encourage the replacement of dilapidated homes, according to islandpacket.com. Committee Chair Fred Hamilton says one developer is considering siting manufactured homes (MH) because they are half the cost of modular homes–$40,000 for the least expensive MH as compared to $80,000 for a modular home. Consideration is also being given to allowing developers to build more homes than zoning regulations permit providing they include a certain number of affordable housing. ##
